 ~Being/Feelings of Immortality~
Back to Full Blog

Immortality

Foil'd by our fellow-men, depress'd, outworn,
We leave the brutal world to take its way,
And, Patience! in another life, we say
The world shall be thrust down, and we up-borne.

And will not, then, the immortal armies scorn
The world's poor, routed leavings? or will they,
Who fail'd under the heat of this life's day,
Support the fervours of the heavenly morn?

No, no! the energy of life may be
Kept on after the grave, but not begun;
And he who flagg'd not in the earthly strife,

From strength to strength advancing only he,
His soul well-knit, and all his battles won,
Mounts, and that hardly, to eternal life.

One of my favorites of the Victorian poets, and one of the most neglected (he's always in the long shadows of Tennyson and Browning). I hadn't read this Arnold poem before. Thanks for sharing. (Love your new background. Beautiful woods.)

Wild,
It's good to see ya! I read your post and it is hard raising and taking care of children, I know this nuch from experience. Try taking care of 6 ALL in steps, whew. We lived for along time in Colorado and had no family OR help.

Now as I wouldn't wish that on anyone I will say this now, looking back I loved every minute and would only change very few things. It made me a strong woman, and now is our time, with frequent visits from kids and grand-kids.

You are doing a fine job and you should be very proud. Have a good day and do visit again.

Ah Victorian poetry , how awesome. You always have neat shit on your posts. I might google some Shakespeare poetry , if for nothing else it'll be some good reading. WOW never have I had so many comments on one post , what happened to Sparrow? I went to leave her a comment and her blog was deactivated , hope they did not run her off. Well enough said call if ya wanna.

Gypsy,
She e-mailed me and said she was having computer problems. But I don't know why she is closed, as she has left her other blog opened. I'll send you an e-mail in a bit to tell more, not to be said here for roaming eyes.

Crone - this stanza caught my thought -
"From strength to strength advancing only he,
His soul well-knit, and all his battles won,
Mounts, and that hardly, to eternal life."

It seems victorious in one sense and yet somewhat alone. Alone I am not sure why - if because of the past or because of choice - a bit of individuality coming through. It is interesting how the world/society really evolves and all the implications of everyone and all choices made truly affect the whole.

Blessings - June

June,
Your words speak such a wisdom that melts my heart at the thought. I mean have you ever had something to say and or a feeling that you wanted to express, but the words and how to format the words, don't come easy enough to float of your tongue.

Well your perception of this piece, is *exactly* how I felt/thought, I just didn't know where to start. I'm not *crazy*, I just had to get that out. I'm glad you stopped by, and I hope you're having a good eve.

Hi Crone,
I enjoyed the poems you posted many thoughts to think about. My computer is having problems again and with work I don’t have much time to be online. I’m not sure if I’ll open Night Sparrow’s Nest, I might post a few poems and quotes on the Live and Let Live blog. I’m saddened to see that much of the back biting and hurtful comments on the stream have continued, I will never understand why some people can’t or won’t just live and let live.

Have a wonderful day!

NS,
I don't know why either. BUT I have a strong sense that they are intimidated by others very easily and *WANT* to try and find faults to be scandalous, plus their lives suck and want others lives to suck as well. Hell I really don't know why people do the nasty things that they do.

That's where their Karma will pick up, and for those who choose not to believe in Karma, that's every individuals chose, as for me I'm a firm *BELIEVER* that *What comes around, goes around* and *What goes around comes around*. ALL nasty little people always get their come-upins.. Talk soon.

Matthew Arnold - this blog forced me to do some research - It was so long since I heard his name. I pulled up the Wikipedia article on him - and read it. As noted by F.L., Arnold was the bridge from romanticism and modernism. I pulled out one of my books (The top 500 poems) and it included Dover Beach, Arnold's probably most famous poem and as some critics note, probably the first modern poem.

Arnold wasn't traditional believer - he apparently loved churchly ritual (probably for the imagery it created) but declared the death of traditional faith.

I think the poem you quoted illustsrates the transition point from religion to spirituality.

those are my thoughts,

ron

ron,
I believe you to be right. I found this poem along with some of Shakespeare's and Arnold's jumped out to me. After your anology/comment, you have intrigued me to do some research on him. Thanks for your insightful comment. Have a nice eve.
