when i was four years old they tried to test my i.q. they showed me a picture of 3 oranges and a pear they said, which one is different? it does not belong they taught me different is wrong but when i was 13 years old i woke up one morning thighs covered in blood like a war like a warning that i live in a breakable takeable body an ever increasingly valuable body that a woman had come in the night to replace me deface me see, my body is borrowed yeah, i got it on loan for the time in between my mom and some maggots i don't need anyone to hold me i can hold my own i got highways for stretchmarks see where i've grown i sing sometimes like my life is at stake 'cause you're only as loud as the noises you make i'm learning to laugh as hard as i can listen 'cause silence is violence in women and poor people if more people were screaming then i could relax but a good brain ain't diddley if you don't have the facts we live in a breakable takeable world an ever available possible world and we can make music like we can make do genius is in a back beat backseat to nothing if you're dancing especially something stupid like i.q. for every lie i unlearn i learn something new i sing sometimes for the war that i fight 'cause every tool is a weapon - if you hold it right.

Crone - yes we have taught that different is not good; creativity is not good; so what do we do with those who are not like us? Things that look different than what we would make, draw or create? As one who worked with preschoolers much of my life I struggled to encourage creativity - got to run as I just call to meet someone - June

Crone, very good and a real thinking piece. I only read it once, but will probably go back and re-read several times. I tell you, one wrong word from someone, especially in authority, can ruin a part of a persons future. I remember in 6th grade and I wanted to surprise the teacher with a special project. I found a wonderful photo in an encyclopedia of three different airplanes of different colors. So my mom bought me a poster board and it took me all weekend to free hand draw the planes and then spent time coloring them, with crayons, a deep yellow, blue and red. So I was so proud to take it to school and show the teacher. I didn't get the reaction I thought I would receive. Instead of being impressed, she accused me of tracing them. I was devastated and so embarrassed. Back then, parents weren't ones to go to the school and confront the teacher, it was more like, fight your own battles. So from then on I hated to try anything creative because I didn't want to ever have that heartache again. It even affected me in high school when it was time to sign up for elective subjects. I wanted to join the chorus and have an art class and I did sign up for them, but then decided to drop them before they even started, because I knew I would just fail at both. I didn't learn that I am really a very creative person until I married, had children and matured enough to finally realize that that teacher didn't know what she was talking about. I am now known to be a very creative person and always coming up with all sorts of projects. When I became a Teacher Aide and was for 20 years, I never put a child's efforts down. I would sit down and guide where guidance was necessary, but other than that, I only encouraged their unique creativity. Now that I'm subbing all grades, I still remember that teacher. You know what? In God's own wisdom, I had to go through what I did so I would be able to help hundreds of others follow their dream through their creativity. I thank that teacher for teaching me how not to treat a child, no matter what their age may be. Sorry to have rambled, but your poem reminded me of my own past 50 years ago. Blessings, Karen

June, Each and everyone of us are different, there is no changing that. BUT what we can do is accept everyone for who they are and what they believe in, religiously, or otherwise. Thanks for commenting, sorry my response is late, I've not been online much as of late.

Indian, I'm glad you liked it and really the kids think what is shown to them, and taught to them. What has been installed into the kids, is how they will perceive any and all things in their life. Have a good one.

Karen, thanks for sharing and anytime you feel like doing the same, feel free to ramble hear. I don't know how long I will be here, due to major family problems, but in the mean time, my casa is your casa, as far as letting it out. Have a good day!
